Pushing through Your First Year in Business

You’re finally there. You’re finally a real entrepreneur with a real business and you’re as ready to begin as a school kid with newly-sharpened pencils on the first day of school. You have stars in your eyes and you dream of great success for everyone involved. But the truth is, it’s not that easy. As a matter of fact, it can be downright hard.

As we all know, many businesses don’t even survive their first year. So how can you separate yourself and keep yourself from becoming one of those boring statistics? Below are five ideas:

  • Believe in yourself and your vision. A dedicated entrepreneur needs to have a commitment level that is mainly unheard of in the general population. However, it’s not just about a work ethic that won’t quit (working late nights, working through your daughter’s dance recital, etc.) it’s more about having an incredible faith in what you are trying to achieve.
  • A true entrepreneur knows how to live with being uncomfortable. When you’re comfortable, you’re not pushing yourself; you’re not expanding your vision or realizing your dreams. Being uncomfortable means you’re pressing yourself beyond your limits, which is a great entrepreneurial character trait.
  • Eat Ramen noodles before filet mignon. Entrepreneurs know sacrifice. Before they find success they must scrimp, save, and eat a lot of boxed mac and cheese. It’s usually the way of the business world – struggle before success.
  • What is your goal? Write it down. Learn it, love it, live it. Your goal should become a mantra in your head and you should say it daily. Never forget your goal because it is why you are eating boxed mac and cheese, missing your daughter’s dance recital, and living with general uncomfortableness.
  • It’s not just a board game, it’s how entrepreneurs live. Loving risk and the thrill and exhilaration that it offers is one way to get through the first year of being an entrepreneur.
